Top 10 countdown maker

Ten is a brag and a pacing problem. A Top 10 countdown maker will happily line up ten cards. The viewer will not happily watch ten stories. The format works when each rank is a glimpse: one action, one title, a number change, the next glimpse. It fails when each rank is a setup, a joke, and a reaction.

Do the math before you film a tenth clip

Intro plus outro is about two and a half seconds. Each rank adds a sting of just under half a second plus whatever hold you set.

Those are estimates from this editor’s intro, sting, and outro, not a promise about how an app will count watch time. They are accurate enough to decide. If your platform habit is “under 35 seconds,” you are in the 2–3 second column, and every title has to be readable at a glance. The sample Top 10 loads at 3 seconds for that reason.

Lifetime allows 8 seconds because some ranks need it. Using 8 seconds on all ten is how you build a video nobody finishes. The slider is per clip so the one slow rank can be long and the other nine can be short. If you cannot tell the ranks apart at a glance, you do not have ten moments. You have three moments and seven repeats, and the repeats are why a Top 10 dies in the middle. Cut before you decorate.

Ten titles, one pattern

With this many cards, inconsistency reads as sloppiness. Pick a pattern and keep it.

• All outcomes: “Ace,” “Whiff,” “Trade.”
• All places: “A site,” “B site,” “Mid.”
• All objections: “Too loud,” “Too slow,” “Too late.”

Do not mix a joke title, a full sentence, and a filename. The filename is what the editor guesses from the file. Replace it. “clip_0042 final” is not a rank title.

Because the plate only has two lines, write the title, then delete two words. If it still makes sense, you are done. The retention notes go further on open loops. For a Top 10 the loop is the number itself. You do not need a verbal “number nine will shock you” on every card. The sting already says the number changed.

Order when you have too many candidates

Start with twelve or fifteen, not ten. The cut is the edit. A Top 10 that includes two clips you are apologizing for in the title is a Top 8 with filler.

Group them before you rank them. If three clips are the same kind of moment, keep the clearest and bench the others. The rail will show anything past the tenth as Bench. Benched clips are not in the export. They are there so you can swap without re-uploading. Removing a clip revokes the local preview URL. The file on your disk is untouched.

Play order still runs from the top of the rail to the bottom. #10 plays first. #1 plays last. If you catch yourself wanting #1 first “so people see the best one,” you want a highlight reel, not a countdown. Make the highlight reel in an editor, or accept that the countdown’s payment is the wait.

When to refuse the format

Stop at Top 5 if:

• Each clip needs a sentence of context the title cannot hold.
• You only have seven honest moments and the last three would be repeats.
• The audio on each clip is speech that cannot be cut to two seconds without becoming nonsense.

Stop entirely if you do not have rights to ten clips. A countdown multiplies the rights problem by the number of files. One uncleared song in file seven is in the export. The TikTok-specific page covers safe areas and sound. The rights point is the same on every platform.

Preview the ten before you export

Select Top 10, load the sample, and watch it once on your phone or in a narrow window. The workbench puts the 9:16 frame in the center of the remaining space, with the clip rail beside it on a desktop and above the rail on a phone. If the rank feels cramped, it will feel cramped in the app. Switch between Slam and Board. Busy footage usually wants Slam’s plate. A pile of similar bright clips sometimes wants Board so the numbers read as a sequence of cards.

Free export will not write all ten. The dialog says so before it cuts to three. Lifetime writes the ten you previewed, at 1080×1920, without the watermark. Either way you get a file, not a project you have to reopen in another tool to finish the countdown.

How long is a Top 10 in ShortsRank?

With 3 second holds it is a bit over half a minute including stings and cards. At 4 seconds it pushes toward three quarters of a minute. At 8 seconds it is too long for a single short.

Can the free plan export ten clips?

No. Free export keeps three. You can still preview ten. Lifetime exports up to ten.

Should every Top 10 be a short?

Only if each item is a glimpse. If each item needs a story, make a Top 5 or cut a longer video in a full editor.
